Best Lawn Mowing Tips to Boost Curb Appeal Before Selling Your Home

Mowing your lawn can be a chore that most homeowners dread, especially if you don’t have children old enough to take over mowing duties for you. Yes, the whole process is annoying, dirty, and laborious. Why do we even grow grass in the first place? Who decided that every home must have a lawn? We don’t have these answers for you today, but we do have some answers that will help you do this weekly chore with a little more ease, and that’s worth something! Here are some handy tips and best practices for mowing your lawn, especially if you’re getting ready to sell your home so that you can use your lawn mowing energies to help increase your bottom dollar at closing.

Set The Correct Height

Resist the urge to cut your grass low enough to be a putting green at your local golf course. Yes, it will lengthen the time between needed mowings, but it will do more harm than good in the long run by allowing dry patches and weeds to get a foothold. Keep your lawn between 2.5 inches and 3 inches in height for best results.

Sharpen Your Mower Blades

If you dislike mowing, then one contributing factor could be dull blades. If you notice that you aren’t getting clean cuts or that you have to pass the same section several times before it looks good, then you may need to sharpen your blades. We recommend sharpening them at least twice a season if not more to keep your mower and your lawn at their best.

Mow in Different Patterns Each Time

You may get caught up in the same old routine every time you mow, but cutting it in the exact same way each time is actually the best way to go. Your grass will grow in a certain way if you mow in the exact same pattern each time. This can make things look uneven and slows down mowing. If you did a straight line pattern last week, switch it up the next time by going in circles or doing a diagonal pattern instead.

Overgrown Lawn? Mow It Down Over Several Sessions

If your lawn has some long spots that are a tad overgrown, then you will need to mow several times to get it down to the recommended 3 inch height. If your lawn is, for example, over 6 inches in some areas, then we recommend first mowing things down to 4 inches before waiting a week and then mowing it back down to the 2.5 or 3 inch height. Taking an overgrown lawn all the way down to the minimum height is not a good idea because removing more than one-third of the blade height can damage the grass, which can ruin large patches of grass in the long run.
